Larry Cherubino Winemaker

Larry Cherubino / Owner & Winemaker

Raised in the Swan Valley, Larry began his journey in wine while studying agriculture, taking on a vintage as a cellar hand at Houghton, Australia’s third-oldest winery. Captivated by the experience, he deferred his studies to spend several years working vintages across Europe and back at Houghton, gaining invaluable hands-on experience. After earning a double major in agribusiness and horticulture, Larry pursued oenology at Roseworthy College, graduating in 1996. His early career took him to Hardy ’s Tintara in South Australia, where he developed his understanding of wine styles, followed by extensive travel to iconic wine regions like Tuscany, Bordeaux, Burgundy, and the Loire. Returning to Western Australia, Larry rejoined Houghton, rising to senior winemaker and regional manager for BRL Hardy. During his tenure, he introduced 30 new wines, including the Gladstones Cabernet, and selected vine clones tailored to WA’s conditions, focusing on flavour and tannin quality. In 2003, Larry left Houghton to offer vine-to-wine consultancy services worldwide. His years of experience, thousands of kilometres travelled, and deep connections to small West Australian family vineyards culminated in the founding of Larry Cherubino Wines in 2005. What began with the modest release of ‘Ad Hoc’ and ‘The Yard’ has since grown into a celebrated portfolio, including labels like Ovale, Laissez Faire, and Pedestal. Today, Cherubino owns vineyards in Margaret River, Pemberton, and the Great Southern, producing wines that reflect the best of these regions. ‘Great winemaking starts in the vineyard, ’ Larry says—a philosophy that continues to shape his work as a winemaker and consultant.

  • The award-winning and family-owned Western Australian business was established in 2005, by Larry and his wife Edwina, and is now astutely recognised as one of Australia’s most successful and innovative wine producers.

Larry and Edwina purchased their first parcel of land in 2004 in
Frankland River, where Edwina grew up. The Cherubino brand was
brought to life the following year with the release of one wine – from
their spare room. Fast forward a few years and the Cherubinos jumped at the chance to purchase the neighbouring vineyard as well as several acres of prime river and vineyard country. Their Riversdale vineyard is now considered one of the best in the state.

Since those early years, the range of wines has grown and has
received a variety of accolades from respected wine critics such
as James Halliday as well as various medals and trophies along the way.

The Cherubino range includes wines such as Ad Hoc Hen & Chicken
Chardonnay and Cruel Mistress Pinot Noir, targeted at the independent retail and On Trade sectors. Hatch Mansfield are thrilled to be working with Hallgarten & Novum Wines who will continue to supply the On Trade.

Second Bracket –
The Museum Chardonnays

Ovale Gin Gin Chardonnay 2018
(2019 National Cool Climate Wine Show - Gold Medal)
96 points, Jane Faulkner 2021 Halliday Wine Companion
A real energy and drive here with a more linear, taut structure compared with its Dijon/Karridale sibling. Mouthwatering flavours of pink grapefruit, lemon with struck-match, flinty sulphides. Laser precision across the palate but there's give, it's not lean and mean. It has power and drive with refreshing acidity to the very end.
Ovale Dijon Chardonnay 2017
95 points, James Halliday, 2021 Halliday Wine Companion
A blend of clones 95 and 96, hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, fermented and matured in new and 1yo French barriques for 6 months. It has the delicate touch that Cherubino uses with all his white wines. This is a baby, with fresh citrus and stone fruits to the fore, and will steadily develop in bottle through to '24 and beyond. Cool Karridale is an ideal site for the French clones.
Margaret River Chardonnay 2015

96 Points, James Halliday, The Australian Wine Companion 2017
A beautifully composed chardonnay, everything in the right place, and everything balanced. The fruit flavours span white stone fruit and pink grapefruit, none overt, and the acidity is neatly tucked in behind.
Pemberton Chardonnay 2013
97 Points, James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion
I refuse point-blank to use that grossly overworked word 'passion', and have much the same attitude to 'crafted'. However, Larry Cherubino's craft created this beautifully balanced and elegant chardonnay, its fragrant bouquet impressive, but it is the exceptional lissom grace of the immaculately balanced and seamless palate that sets this wine apart.

Carnarvon white asparagus, hollandaise, mandarin

Third Bracket –
The Current Cabernets
Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
Frankland River Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
Riversdale Cabernet Blend 2021

Angus Pure fillet, green peppercorn butter, leafy greens

Fourth Bracket 4 –
The Museum Cabernets
Budworth Cabernet Blend 2018
98 Points, James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion
Hand picked, crushed/destemmed and held on skins for 2 months. Great colour, deep but vivid crimson/purple. Cedary French oak and blackcurrant fruit are joined at the hip by superb tannins that reflect the day-by-day assessment of the must during the latter weeks of maceration. The mouth-watering savoury aftertaste is the coup de grace for this great cabernet.
Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
97 Points. James Suckling, jamessuckling.com
This is Cherubino in top gear. A striking cabernet that has impeccable ripeness, depth and concentration. There's a little perfume, dark cherry, cassis and blood plum, some redder berries too; spicy oak - this has it all. The palate is smooth, flowing and packed with concentrated dark fruit flavor. Tannins are handsomely groomed, flavors run deep and this has an impressive future. Balanced enough to drink now, but it will start to peak around 2020 and hold for several years after that. Brilliant wine. Screw cap.
Frankland River Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
97 Points, James Halliday, The Australian Wine Companion 2015
This has the best crimson-purple colour of its Great Southern and Margaret River siblings, heralding a wine with exceptional varietal purity and focus, fine-grained tannins woven through its full-bodied black fruits, oak playing a less obvious role than it does in the other two wines. This is for the Bordeaux purist with intense patience.

Shadows of Blue, sourdough, quince
