Lightning Strikes Twice at Henschke
Following the extraordinary 2021 vintage was never going to be easy, but Henschke’s 2022 Single Vineyard Collection rises beautifully to the occasion.
Released globally on 6 May, 2026
If 2021 brought power and stature, 2022 looks to be defined by finesse, detail and vineyard expression - a release that confirms this is a remarkable era for one of Australia’s most revered wine families.
Andrew Caillard MW calls it a “transformative release”, a phrase that feels especially fitting for a collection shaped by vineyard transparency, old-vine pedigree and a season that has delivered wines of purity, resonance and site expression.
At the centre of it all is Mount Edelstone, now celebrating its 70th vintage and reaffirming its place as one of Australia’s great single-vineyard wines. Ray Jordan has already placed the 2022 among the finest releases of Mount Edelstone, high praise for a wine with such history, stature and consistency.
What makes this release so compelling is that it doesn’t seem to be about sheer power. Instead, the story is one of finesse, detail and vineyard character — wines that feel confident, expressive and deeply rooted in place. For Henschke to follow such an extraordinary 2021 with a collection spoken of in these terms really does feel like lightning striking twice.

2022 Henschke ‘Hill of Grace’ Shiraz
99+ Points, Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot
May well be the prettiest Hill of Grace yet released. May also be the best, and that's saying something. I thought 2021 was the greatest yet, then came 2022. Doesn’t have the raw power and luxurious opulence of the ’21, yet this might be a case of less is more. The depth and intensity of fruit that comes from vines that were planted in the 1860s is undeniable, but it’s all harnessed and focused into an effortless, long, and most graceful structure. There’s a distinct combination of black olive and bay leaf with a lift of sage bush. The palate is immensely powerful and intense with a focused concentration of fruit. As it opens up, other sweet fruit characters emerge. Perfumed and floral with blackberry and blueberry notes. It’s still relatively tight with fine-grained tannins.
99 Points, Andrew Caillard MW | The Vintage Journal 2025
Arguably the most famous, historic family estate vineyard in the country, and certainly in the Eden Valley as the cooler and higher region in the wider Barossa zone. This comes from a highly regarded vintage, celebrated by the Henschke team for its balance of yield against the season; the source vines ranging from the oldest which have seen around 160 vintages, as well as a smaller selection of 35-100 year olds. A wine with a stored wisdom and depth of character, revealed by its marriage of dark berried fruit and exotic spices, a sophisticated ease of stature and balance of flavour, fruit drive, structure and volume, with underlying power and energy yet surprisingly fresh and vibrant. Completely in its own zone with a view to staying alive and exciting for many, many years.

Australia's finest and most famous single-site shiraz. Incredible ancestor vines of 160 years of age are the heart of the wine, with additions of centenarian (100-plus years), survivor (70-plus years) and old-vine (35-plus years) shiraz; matured in seasoned French oak for 20 months. It's the aromatic detail, texture and elegance that immediately stands out with the Hill of Grace. Pure satsuma plum, blackberry and black cherry fruits with hints of bay leaf, mace, sage, Chinese five-spice, panforte, cedar, tapenade, black pepper, pan juices, graphite, dried meats and purple floral tones. The amplitude of this wine always amazes me. Everything just resonates perfectly; fruit, tannin and acidity are all in harmony and the arc across the palate is perfectly timed. Stunning.

Ranked #1 of 27 2022 Shiraz from Eden Valley
Medium-deep red with a tint of purple; aromas of tar, creosote, bitumen, black pepper and smoke. Very intense, full bodied and firm, with a solid backbone of tannins running throughout the wine, blackberry weaving deep within it and not yet fully overt. It has serious weight, density and understated power, lasting very long on the palate. A top vintage and a wine of gravitas.
2022 Henschke ‘Mount Edelstone’ Shiraz
98 points, Andrew Caillard MW, The Vintage Journal
100% Shiraz from 110 year old vines out of the Henschke family’s celebrated Mt Edelstone Vineyard in the Eden Valley. Matured for 20 months in just 8% new, the rest seasoned French oak hogsheads, this vintage has all the hallmarks of its 70 year history as a masterful single vineyard creation. Dark crimson in the glass, with crushed plum and a faint waft of native bush in the higher toned aromas, underpinned by senses of iron, ink and flint-stone. The flow into the mouth brings to life jubed black currant fruit pastille flavours with bay leaf, kitchen herbals, peppercorn and savoury spices, lifted mid-palate with delightfully balanced acidity and gently arriving, soft wool-like tannins. A wine for the here and now as well as for ages to come.

An elegant wine of great finesse and poise that captures in an instant the very essence of this great vineyard. The nose shows a more savoury black olive and sage bush character that is lifted with an edgy pepperiness with a hint of bay leaf. It’s bright, lively, with almost boundless energy.. This is the modern Edelstone style in essence, captured magnificently. Has all the character with less opulence and more finesse. Love it. There is great brightness and energy with a luminosity that positively glows on the palate. Has traces of the vineyard dried herb and herbal characters with a sage bush infusion. A highly scented wine that captures the vineyard itself in full flower. The wine is impeccably balanced with the 110- year-old vines delivering fruit of tremendous concentration and intensity harness with a fine acidty and tannin contribution, with a combination of 8% new and 92% season French oak hogsheads holding it for 20 months. The vineyard itself is managed with a combination of organic and biodynamic practices.

The 70th anniversary release of this much-loved and iconic Australian wine. A hail event reduced yields somewhat, with perfect instances of summer rainfall and a mild, drawn-out finish to the growing season. The end result was an exceptionally strong vintage. Bright magenta crimson with aromas of pure plum, blackberry and black cherry and a flash of blue fruits over sage, peppercorn, rosehip, mace, bay leaf, crushed stone, herb garden, gentle cedar tones, milk chocolate, pan juices and, further back, tobacco and crushed rocks. Beautifully balanced on the palate, showing a graceful arc of travel, the fine tannins melting away into the fruit. The finish stretches out persistently, all detail and elegance.

Ranked #2 of 27 2022 Shiraz from Eden Valley
Deep, bright purple-red colour; fresh and bright young-wine aromas with notes of of blackberry underlying the fresh and dried herbs, smoked meats, pepper and mixed spices. Great depth of flavour and concentration but also supreme elegance and harmony. The balance is so impressive in such a young Edelstone. There are lashings of tannins but they are lovely supple, fine-grained tannins, in perfect harmony with the wine. An exceptional vintage indeed.
2022 Henschke ‘The Wheelwright’ Shiraz
97 points, Dave Brookes, The Wine Companion
Shiraz sourced from the Wheelwright vineyard in the Eden Valley; aged in French oak, 10% new, for 20 months. Expressive and fruit pure with aromas of blackberry, blueberry and black cherry fruits with hints of brown spice, flowering herbs, sage, a flash of red cherry, violets, cedar, graphite and crushed rock. There's a lovely core of pure plum and blue fruits over graphite, layers of spice and citrus blossom high tones. Graceful and sleek with melt-in-the-mouth tannins and a bright, sustained finish.

This distinctive wine has been an annual favourite of mine from the time it was first released. The vineyard was planted in the Mount Lofted Ranges by Cyril Henschke in 1968 to mark the 100th anniversary of Henschke. This is such a lovely wine, brimming with bright red fruits supported by a fine, bright and lively acidity, fine chalky tannins and a neatly implemented oak. Has a beautifully seductive mouthfeel with tremendous depth and concentration of shiraz.
This is the most southern of the three single vineyards and comes in after Edelstone and Hill of Grace. It’s quite different from those wines. Has beautiful peppery violet fragrances with stacks of red fruit. Matured in 10% new and 90% seasoned French oak hogsheads for 20 months before blending and bottling. The Wheelwright, first released to commemorate 150 years of Henschke family winemaking, pays tribute to founder, winemaker Johann Christian Henschke a skilled stonemason and wheelwright. He was among the first generation of the early German Silesian community and established the family winery in 1868.
96 points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review
Deep and bright red with a purple meniscus; intense raspberry and crushed fresh herbs on the nose, predominantly sage and rosemary, thyme also, the palate soft and fleshy with a firm sheen of fine-grained tannins that persist throughout the length of the palate. Intense spices too—this has the personality of Eden Valley roaring through with its inimitable character. Lovely fragrance; powerful structure; firm tannin finish. This will reward long ageing.
94 Points, Andrew Caillard MW
From vines planted near the village of Eden Valley in 1968 by Cyril Henschke, this is a big, generous Shiraz with plenty of savoury elements to add depth and complexity - earthy notes, bay leaf and black olive offer a background to higher toned floral aromas that suggest violet at first, all harmonising and hugging the fruit core in the palate. Prominent tannins add to this solid style, a wine with power yet still intensely warm-hearted.
