McHenry Hohnen’s Single Vineyard
Chardonnay & Cabernet Are Now Among Australia’s Best

Ray Jordan - WA Wine Guide 2023

“McHenry Hohnen was founded in 2004 by two families whose wine experience in Margaret River dates back to the 1970s. With an unwavering focus on crafting site-expressive wines, biodynamics and organic farming techniques are used in the vineyard and a minimalist intervention approach is paramount in the winery. The top-drawer Rolling Stone is a cabernet dominant red blend of the highest order while the individual vineyard chardonnays are now among the region's very finest.”

Vinous Media ‘The Yin and the Yang of Western Australia’ Article By Angus Hughson

McHenry Hohnen is an absolute star in Margaret River. Today, founder Murray McHenry leads the team with assistance from Head Winemaker Jacopo Dalli Cani, among a handful of other top wineries. Dalli Cani's focus on vineyard sustainability and biodynamics has helped him weave his magic to craft stylish, subtle and age-worthy wines. McHenry Hohnen

Ray Jordan

McHenry Hohnen was founded in the belief that the Margaret River region is capable of producing some of the very best single-site wines in the world. Each vineyard offers the winemaking team an array of soils and microclimates to explore. The grape growing philosophy is anchored in organic and biodynamic farming and the principles of regenerative agriculture. The aim is to maximize the natural diversity of flora and fauna in our soils, cover crops, riparian areas and remnant bushland. In doing so, the intention is to embrace the uniqueness of each site and create wines that are a true representation of place and time.

About McHenry Hohnen

Biodynamic farming, minimal intervention winemaking, single vineyard wines of Margaret River.

Since its inception McHenry Hohnen has had an unwavering focus on crafting site expressive wines. As our vines age and the soils continue to evolve, we see the individuality and beauty of the land continually developing in our wines.

Our wines are sourced from our family estate of three vineyards, all located in the southern part of the Margaret River Wine Region: Hazel’s Vineyard and Farm, Calgardup Brook Vineyard and Burnside Vineyard. For decades, our founder and owner Murray McHenry has been a leading proponent in pushing the viticultural boundaries of this pristine region. While our portfolio is grounded in Chardonnay and Bordeaux varieties, we are also well regarded for less traditional varieties for this region such as Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache, Mataro and Zinfandel.

We see our role as stewards of the land and have implemented organic farming practices for many years to create the optimal conditions for soil health and the quality of the grapes harvested. Our winemaking team craft wines that pay homage to the site of origin and use low impact techniques combined with an acute attention to detail to achieve the goal of the finest site specific wines.

Whilst the story of McHenry Hohnen is steeped in the history of the region, we look to the future with anticipation as our soil, vines and wines continue to evolve.

The Wine List

First Course

2023 Mchenry Hohnen Sauvignon Blanc (Current Release)
Ranked #2 of 32 2023 Sauvignon Blanc from Margaret River
Light, bright yellow colour, the bouquet has a nutty overlay which points to barrel fermentation, spicy and quite varietal underneath, while the palate delivers intense and concentrated sauvignon flavour of real penetration and persistence. This takes the grape to a higher level: excellent now and I suspect it will build further complexity and detail if given more time.
95 Points - Huon Hooke, The Real Review
2023 Mchenry Hohnen Marsanne/Roussanne
The Australian Top 100 by Nick Ryan
Stone fruit, green apple, a little mint and fennel, some honeyed florals in the mix too. It’s flavoursome, but balanced, flint though a lightly buttered nutty richness, acidity is present and freshens the wine up nicely, and the finish is long with some oatmeal and spice, and a bit of citrus zip. Excellent.
94 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

Second Course

2024 Laterite Hills Chardonnay
This is a wine that, in the last few years, has lifted into another zone, and in this vintage it's showing real intensity of fruit, combined with fine, precise focus and remarkable length. It's a delicately framed chardonnay with a fine chalky character that threads through lemony grapefruit and light melon notes. The palate is fine, precise, and sustained, with quite remarkable intensity. A very good wine for less than $50.
94 Points - Ray Jordan, rayjordanwine.com
2023 Calgardup Brook Vineyard Chardonnay
Traditionally the more delicate of the three top-tier chardonnays. This is a wonderful example of the vineyard and style. Fragrant and intense on the nose with floral grapefruit, cashew and light lemon curd influences. There’s a little of that limestone character as well adding to its crystalline feel. The palate is tightly wound and deeply powerful with a tight inner core. Finishes with a little savouriness that balances it perfectly.
97 Points - Ray Jordan, rayjordanwine.com
2023 Hazel's Vineyard Chardonnay
The vineyard stamps its character on this from the get-go. Notes of lemon scents with lightly roasted cashew and faint struck match. The palate is intense and with a fine acidity and minerally character defining it through its linear range. Beautifully integrated and tightly coiled before releasing through to a sustained finish. A wine that will really show its true worth in another few years.
98 Points - Ray Jordan, rayjordanwine.com
2023 Burnside Vineyard Chardonnay
From a site planted in '81 by legend David Hohnen. It’s up there as one of great chardonnays from Margaret River. It’s a wine of distinction, it’s classy and distinctive due to that steep site comprising granitic/micaceous soils. Thoughtful winemaking brings out tantalising flavours of pink grapefruit, white nectarine, flint and loads of savoury attributes. The spicy oak is a subtle inclusion, the creamy lees bolster the superfine, long palate and the mouth-watering natural acidity creates a long and pure finish. Just stunning.
96 Points - Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion

Third Course

2023 Ironstone Grenache Tempranillo
A 67/33% grenache/tempranillo fermented and aged separately in small concrete vats, no oak used. It’s heady with florals, raspberry leaf, red lollies and menthol, a touch of sarsaparilla but lots of savouriness here. Red fruits dot the fuller-bodied palate as do textural, sandy tannin. And yet with all the texture there’s a smoothness, too. It’s simply a delicious, very satisfying drink.
95 Points - Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion
2022 Malbec Cabernet Petit Verdot
Opens with a brilliant high-definition colour. Then the aromas of blackcurrant, spicy plum and juby red fruits engage. The energy evident on the nose strikes through into the palate with its concentrated red fruit delivered with poise. Has a slightly chewy mouth feel but the bright red flavours really emerge as it moves effortlessly to a long finish. Will support extended cellaring.
95 Points - Ray Jordan, rayjordanwines.com

Fourth Course

2019 Hazel's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
Fermented in concrete, matured for 16 months in French oak (30% new). In recent blind tastings, the McHenry Hohnen Hazel's Vineyard Chardonnay and Cabernet have both come in the top 5 on my page, among eye-watering company: Château Lafite, Château Léoville Poyferré, Chevalier-Montrachet, Les Genevrières and others. The price, when you consider the ability to stand up alongside these wines is equal to but a penny, tuppence... graphite, cassis, mulberry, briny acidity and layers of exotic spice. This is a lush superstar wine, and let me tell you: if McHenry Hohnen isn't on your radar in Margaret River, you aren't doing it right.
97 Points - Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion
2017 Hazel's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
A fragrant, pretty and understated Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon with layers of violet, freshly sawn cedar and blackcurrant aromas wrapped up in understated, high quality oak. An energetic palate follows with lovely bright fruits, and al-dente tannins in support of a long, supple finish. Delicious already but also has the backbone and balance to enjoy over the medium term.
93 Points - Angus Hughson, Wine Pilot
2015 Hazel's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
This is beautiful. Succulent blackcurrant and plum with a wonderful leafy minerality. Has a sweet fruit character that is most appealing . Lovely texture. Bright and satiny with an energy through the palate. Chalky supporting tannins. Easily the best of these wines yet released
96 Points - Ray Jordan, West Australian Wine Guide 2021
2019 Rolling Stone Cabernet Sauvignon
Ray Jordan’s Top Reds 2025
This is a blend of cabernet sauvignon, malbec, merlot and petit verdot. Opens with beautifully scented, aromas of blackcurrant and blackberry with a slightly cedary influence. The palate is perfectly weighted and crafted. Deeply concentrated fruit surges forward, supported by quite firm tannins and plenty of oak. Has a slightly chalky character with traces of bay leaf and seashell minerality. A wine for extended cellaring.
