  • Growing up in Western Australia’s pristine Margaret River, with a father who studied pests in vineyards for the Agricultural Protection Board, Julian was fascinated by wine from a young age. After a brief dalliance with marine biology, he studied winemaking (“It seemed like it’d be fairer on the fish,” he jokes), then worked in France and Canada as well as Australia’s Clare Valley, Barossa Valley and Coonawarra regions.

In 2011, Julian returned to his hometown to join the Fogarty Wine Group. As Chief Winemaker he’s responsible for the Group’s five brands and a team of 12 winemakers, with a special focus on Deep Woods Estate, one of the region’s most awarded wineries. Cabernet Sauvignon is the crown jewel – and Julian’s favourite variety.

“My life in wine has been a life in Cabernet,” he says. “What I really want to achieve is to make the world’s best Cabernet, and in Margaret River I’m 100% certain that we can do that.”

A steady stream of awards suggests he’s well on his way. In his first four vintages at Deep Woods Estate, Julian won more than 50 gold medals, and more recently was named James Halliday’s 2019 Winemaker of the Year.

His successes haven’t taken away his excitement for winemaking and drive to keep exploring and improving.

“Every season is different and every season you’ve got a new opportunity to make the best wine you could ever make,” says Julian. “That’s probably one of the great joys of winemaking.”

In 2016, Julian co-launched Good Tycoons, an experimental side project created with Deep Woods Estate’s viticulturist, John Fogarty, and John’s brother Mark. They showcase different varieties through small-batch wines including a wild, unfiltered Riesling and a Teroldego, a rare red variety from Northern Italy.

“Wine’s pretty much the fabric of life for me,” says Julian. “It brings people together.”

  • Born and bred in McLaren Vale, Matt was immersed in the wine industry from a young age. Now with more than 20 years of winemaking experience, Matt’s commitment and passion for wine is unwavering. Matt completed a Bachelor of Applied Science (Wine Science) through Charles Sturt university, and he has completed vintages in the Napa Valley, Central Otago and Mosel Valley. He moved to Margaret River in 2012 where he has spent over a decade creating award-winning wines from multiple regions across Western Australia.

Matt is also a regular wine show judge both locally and interstate and in 2023 Matt was awarded the Dux Prize at the prestigious Advanced Wine Assessment Course, run by the AWRI in Adelaide.

  • I tasted through a 10-vintage vertical of the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon at the estate and found that, quite by chance, my higher scores went to wines from the even vintages over the odd ones. The style is rich, muscular and full, and this seems to suit the personality of the even years a little better, although who knows what the future will bring. 2023 was exceptional in Margaret River. Trends only work when there is something interesting to read from them.

Since winemaker Julian Langworthy took over in 2010, the wine has won 19 trophies (including a Jimmy Watson memorial trophy) and 46 Gold medals at shows nationally and internationally. Fogarty Wines purchased the property in 2008.

The Wine List & Menu

First Course
2024 Deep Woods 'Ivory' Sauvignon Blanc (New Release)
This is a wine that when it comes to the marriage of value for money and quality, never disappoints. It’s a vibrant and crunchy fruit-expressive wine with stacks of palate persistence sustained with fine acidity and a little drizzle of citrus. Dry clean finish.
90 Points - Ray Jordan, rayjordan.com

2024 Deep Woods Estate Sauvignon Blanc (New Release)
A neat balance between fruit flavour and texture thanks to some barrel fermentation. Guava, feijoa, passionfruit and pith, citrusy and a little smoky with pine needle freshness. Tangy, juicy acidity plays with the fluffy, creamy lees and this ends up a really good drink with a certain depth to it.
92 Poiny - Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion

Asparagus, hollandaise, mandarin

Second Course
2023 Deep Woods Single Vineyard Chardonnay
Orange blossom cream, light toast, mandarin blossom, crushed almond, nougat, buttery brioche. Round, glossy and polished with lovely fine-grained oak. Fragrant oak apparent – frangipane and frankincense. Green and savoury spice with compelling juxtaposition. Volume and nuance present, as is power and drive. Golden and opulent, yet welcoming and loose-knit. Silvery, fine acidity. Exquisite and rather welcoming. There is much more to come from this wine. Single vineyard in Wallcliffe, aged 10 months in barrel.
96 Points - Cassandra Charlick, Decanter
2024 Deep Woods Reserve Chardonnay (New Release)
Enchanting aromas of cool flint, grapefruit zest, and a whisper of cinnamon. Sleek poached pears and deliciously ripe peach create a harmonious balance on the palate. The sturdy finish leaves a lasting impression of vibrant energy and alluring complexity.
97 Points and Gold Medal Winner - IWSC 2025
2023 Deep Woods Reserve Chardonnay
Best White Wine Queensland Wine Awards 2024

Let’s cut to the chase. The finest Deep Woods chardonnay yet. It has it all. Great fruit has been harnessed with whole bunch pressing and fermentation in new and seasoned French oak. Further lees stirring has built in texture, contributing to a thoroughly beautiful, refined mouth feel. Opens with stone fruit and savoury light lemon curd aromas. Peels off into a palate that reveals more of a struck match and cracked seashell minerality complementing the outstanding fruit concentration. Super wine.
98 Points - Ray Jordan, rayjordanwine.com

Seared salmon, green goddess, shiitake

Third Course
2023 Deep Woods Single Vineyard Cabernets'
This is quite a fabulous wine, with the blend coming from the original Deep Woods Estate vineyard, which was planted many years ago. Intensely powerful bouquet of red fruits and that slightly liqueur cherry, bay leaf nuance. The palate is super intense and bursting with plush red fruits, supported by chalky, almost limestone-like tannins. This is a classically structured cabernet blend that will handle extended cellaring.
97 Points - Ray Jordan, rayjordanwine.com
2022 Deep Woods G2 Cabernet Sauvignon
The nose is deeply perfumed and enticing with lifted aromas of blackcurrants, wild blackberries, potpourri and cedar. The medium- to full-bodied palate has seamlessly integrated tannins and focused acidity, giving complex notes of blood plums, blueberry bush, iodine and black olives. Very restrained and pretty with an underlying power. Sophisticated. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
96 Points - James Suckling, jamessuckling.com

Twice cooked lamb, green pea pesto, buttermilk dressing, leafy greens

Fourth Course
2016 Deep Woods Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Matured for 18 months in new and used French oak. Excellent colour; the wine has a fragrant dark berry bouquet, the palate sheer perfection. So well balanced it seems suspended in the air, cassis fruit supported by feather-light tannins, oak an absorbed spectator. This is a beautiful wine.
99 Points - James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion
2018 Deep Woods Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
A storming example from this 32ha estate in the Yallingup Hills in the northern reaches of Margaret River, getting its maritime influence from Geographe Bay and the Indian Ocean. A very complete wine, showing beautiful ripeness of blue and purple berries, parma violets and inky minerals backed by resolved, delicate, powdery tannins. Lots of concentration, but feels lifted and light thanks to the integrated oak (18 months in barrique) and vibrant acidity. Gorgeous!
98 Points - Decanter
2019 Deep Woods Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Gold – Perth Royal Wine Show 2021
From the estate's first plantings; matured for 18 months in new and used French oak. Deep, vivid crimson purple. Fascinating bouquet that has the bay leaf I often find on the back palate/finish of quality cabernet sauvignon; also cassis (no surprise) wrapped in a fine gauze of oak and pliable tannins. Line, length and balance are all attributes of a classic Margaret River cabernet.
97 Points - James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion
2022 Deep Woods Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Wow, wow, wow. This is so impressive. The power, intensity, structure and complexity are turned up to 10, yet this is still only medium bodied and offers immediate drinking pleasure. Brilliant winemaking, the integrated, highly polished oak is a highlight. This is more blackcurrant and spice rather than blue fruits and the tremendous length and the mouthfeel is a rare pleasure. Despite all the power, this is elegance personified. A point of differentiation between this and many of the other great Margaret River cabernets is that this uses Yallingup fruit of the estate vineyard right out the front of the winery, as opposed to Wilyabrup fruit.
97 Points. - Barry Weinman, September 2024
2023 Deep Woods Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Pre-Release)
The best fruit from the original Deep Woods Estate and Abbey Vale properties has been brought together to create something special with this Reserve Cabernet from the great '23 vintage. You want cabernet, you'll find it here. Every piece sits together harmoniously and with great poise. The blackcurrant, dark plummy, chocolatey characters on the nose are lifted with a little bay leaf, dark olive, and a subtle graphite character. The palate is a powerhouse, but it's harnessed and presented with real aplomb. It's still tightly held together, but there is fruit richness here that makes it so appealing even now. Definitely a wine for the cellar, but hard to put it down even now.
98 Points - Ray Jordan, rayjordanwine.com

Paysan Breton, quince, crostini
