Bruno Desaunay-Bissey Overview
A Family Heritage in Burgundy
Greg Sherwood tasting Bruno Desaunay ‘s 2022 Vintage in Wimbeldon, October 2024.
“I first discovered the incredible wines of Bruno Desaunay-Bissey in January 2021 when I was invited to review the “in-bottle” 2018 vintages with his main UK importer Wimbledon Wine Cellar. I had never heard of Bruno’s wines, never tasted them and was unable to even find anything of interest online about his wines… not on Vinous, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate or even Jasper Morris’s new Burgundy web resource. Bruno genuinely seemed to not only fly below the radar but remained one of the best kept secrets of the Cotes d’Or.
Together with his wife, Marie-Christine Bissey and his son, Bruno manages this small family domaine based in Flagey-Echezeaux that consists of 6 hectares, some of which is owned by the family, including prestigious old vine plots in Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux, with additional plots farmed on a “fermage” basis. With first vintages produced in 1975, it seems almost inconceivable that wines of this quality have managed to enter the market almost unnoticed, especially considering the current clamour and fervour of wine merchants to discover “the next big thing” in Burgundy. Over the years, some of the production was sold off to other domaines and as recently as the mid-1990’s, several of Bruno’s valuable barrels of Grands Echezeaux were being sold to illustrious names like Dominique Laurent. The Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru appellation takes the shape of a triangle with its northern point orientated towards Musigny, its eastern flank bordered by the Clos Vougeot Grand Cru and its western flank by Echezeaux Grand Cru. The Desaunay-Bissey old vine parcel, planted from 1928 onwards, is located on the point of this triangle.”

“They’re the kind of wines you might find on the list in a local restaurant in Burgundy and order without any great expectation, before having your mind blown by an all-time-great wine experience.
Unfortunately Bruno passed away in 2023 and now we see his son Richard taking over the Domaine.
The 2022’s are a very late release because of Bruno’s passing, The French government froze all assets till all affairs of the Domaine were legally passed on to Richard. Hence, we can only offer the 2022’s now. Wow! What a way to begin as the new winemaker. These are without doubt some of the finest under the radar wines in Burgundy…

This drop-dead gorgeous wine boasts a seductive exotic bouquet of blueberries, black cherry kirsch liquor, black berry herbal tea and saline black currant rock candy nuances. The palate is broad, layered, and creamy with a soft, supple well-integrated acidity and fine boned mineral limestone tannins, finishing with a delightful brightness and mouthwatering salinity. True class and pedigree on display here. Drink from 2025 to 2038+.

2022 Bruno Desaunay-Bissey Échezeaux Grand Cru
A deep, dark, and dramatic with a broody black fruited aromatics packed with violets, black cherry, tilled earth, sweet spices, and a subtle bresaola cured meat complexity. The palate is silky, soft, and multi-dimensional with a deceptively powerful structure and frame, tastefully draped in blueberry and black currant fruits with chalky dry tannins and a tangy black cherry vivacity on the concentrated mouth coating finish. A simply stunning vintage from the Domaine with clear old vine poise, power, and intensity. Another great rendition of this famous Grand Cru. Drink from 2025 to 2040+.

2022 Bruno Desaunay-Bissey Grands Échezeaux Grand Cru
The prime Desaunay-Bissey Grands-Echezeaux vineyards are East facing being a prolongation of the Musigny Grand Cru, following the North-South axis of the Côte, and are approaching 80 years of age. This regal wine shows aromatics that are rich, intense, and fragrantly perfumed, with intricate layers of violets, rose petals, earthy loam, purple rock candy confectionary, sweet black cherry and exotic blueberry fruits. This wine is yet again a notable big hitter with outstanding concentration and structural power, presented with polished chalky tannins on a long, majestic finish. What a stunner. This is top drawer red Burgundy from a great vintage. Drink from 2025 to 2040+.
